Covid-19 Awareness in Collaboration with MedGlobal

Title of the Project: Providing awareness and updates on Covid 19 Infection symptoms and transmission to decrease vaccination hesitancy rates as part of Medglobal’s training and education program support in Lebanon

Dates: August 15,2021 ; agreement  signed on September 6,2021

Project Overview

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated health systems and economies across the world, most acutely in countries already strained by years of protracted conflict, refugee influxes, and other national crises. Since February 2021, Lebanon has been experiencing increasing rates of COVID-19 cases and deaths, and several of the more transmissible and severe variants have been identified. Vulnerable populations in the most affected areas are suffering as a result of the compounding impact of COVID-19 on their health and livelihoods. Although the situation continues to deteriorate, pandemic fatigue means fewer people adhere to recommendations on preventing viral spread.

Measurable Outcomes and Results

Loubnaniyoun Thanks to MedGlobal achieved good results through the Covid 19 awareness Program reaching out to more than the set fixed numbers:

Number of Contacted candidates Number of Visited Candidates Number of Registered Candidates Number of Visited Female Candidates: Number of Visited Male Candidates:
53 46 33 35 18

The services provided by the organization through this project were numerous:

  • Awareness about the disease and the vaccination as a solution to protect ourselves
  • Logistical help to register the candidates on Covax , the national vaccination platform
  • Travel to vaccination centers and taking back to their homes warning them about the symptoms after the vaccination and how to relieve pain or fatigue
  • Following up with the candidates to take them to complete the intake of their vaccination doses

And so Loubnaniyoun visited 46 candidates in their homes in the area of Beirut and surroundings benefiting all their families and communities form an awareness cession explaining to them the danger of the Covid 19 Virus, the nature of the vaccines, the difference between the available vaccines and their benefits and the risk people take when they are unvaccinated. Loubnaniyoun succeeded in registering 33 candidates on Covax Platform and the organization is still following up with the candidates to complete their vaccines intake.

Concerning the beneficiaries we have:

  • 33 registered candidates
  1. 23 Females
  2. 10 Males
  3. 26 Lebanese
  4. 7 Non Lebanese: ( Syrian, Egyptian and Ethiopian)
  5. The age bracket is between 13 and 85 Years Old and the average is 41 Years Old

Impact and Sustainability

The duration of the project was of 2 Months and Loubnaniyoun is still following up with the candidates to complete their vaccines intake.

Loubnaniyoun received a very interesting training by Dr. Baban at MedGlobal which strongly prepared the team of the organization to implement the awareness campaign and encourage people to get vaccinated.

During the first Month (October 2021) the team of Loubnaniyoun and specially the five Health Educator along with the Project Manager and Project Coordinator Nadine Daher received the training and prepared the data .The second Month (November 2021) was the implementation of the awareness campaign and registration of the candidates.

While implementing the project Loubnaniyoun noticed the strong impact of this Awareness Campaign among vulnerable communities for many reasons: people didn’t get vaccinated due to their fear concerning the vaccines because of lack of knowledge about them and misconception caused by rumors and religious beliefs, due to the shortage of electricity and internet and due to poverty they simply don’t have smart phones to register on Covax, the National Registration Platform and so Loubnaniyoun thanks to MedGlobal succeeded in encouraging those communities , erasing their fears , enriching their knowledge about the vaccines and the risks of being unvaccinated and broke the technical barriers they are facing by registering them on the national registration platform. We can easily conclude that such project is highly needed in Lebanon first to increase the numbers of vaccinated people, to limit the spread of the disease, to save lives and second to specially help the vulnerable communities not to be left apart due to difficult challenges they are facing with very limited access to knowledge , technology , electricity and internet.

Challenges Loubnaniyoun’s actions to face the challenges
1.      The main challenge Loubnaniyoun faced during this project was the misconception the candidates have about the vaccines due to rumours and religious beliefs 1.      Loubnaniyoun tried as much as possible to brake this wall of ignorance by talking to those candidates about the disease as reality which can be dangerous , explaining to them the side effects and the danger of the virus , stating real examples , or showing them statistics and tackling the religious question by relating it to being able to save ourselves through the gift of medicine given by God ensuring that way an open door for a change of mind
2.      Type of vaccines : People out of lack of sufficient data about certain vaccines like for example AstraZeneca they were preferring Pfizer whereas the Lebanese Ministry of Health was giving for the people below 45 AstraZeneca and so as a result they wouldn’t take the vaccine 2.      Loubnaniyoun to solve this issue they used to encourage the candidates to take AstraZeneca by explaining to them the nature of the vaccine and giving them all the details so they wouldn’t be afraid anymore
3.      Another Challenge Loubnaniyoun faced was with several candidates were already register on their own but didn’t take their shots because they were afraid and not convinced by the fact to get vaccinated and by the type of vaccine 3.      Loubnaniyoun after convincing them to take the vaccine through the awareness cession , the team would contact the MOPH to take another appointment for the candidates, register them again and take them to their appointments
4.      The lack of home vaccination by a specialized medical care was also a challenge specially with Elderly people who are not able to walk properly anymore and not going out of their homes due to their very advanced age .In Lebanon Elderly people are living alone due to acute crisis and lack of a governmental plan taking care of them 4.      Loubnaniyoun had 2 cases like this , one with 2 elderly who don’t go out from their home and with this case the organization couldn’t convince them because they simply don’t go out and another case where the elderly female candidate couldn’t walk , because of diabetes and she is living on the 7th floor and with the electricity shortage she can’t even rely on the elevator so Loubnaniyoun succeeded to take her by using the services of the Red Cross

Current Needs

Having positive results after each awareness visit and happy candidates after each vaccine taken made Loubnaniyoun’s team proud of this difference they are making and this of course thanks to MedGlobal for giving to the organization the opportunity to implement such an efficient and needed project .With the increasing number of Corona Cases in Lebanon and the variants ‘ rapid spread other Awareness Campaign are needed especially in rural areas where the access to electricity , internet and good knowledge is even scarcer than in urban cities . Also the need for special medical units to do home vaccination is growing especially in a country like Lebanon where the actual acute crisis is affecting the citizens’ life at all levels.
